Best Practices for Communicating Cleanliness

According to a recent survey by Tripadvisor, 92% of today’s travelers report cleanliness as extremely or very important when making decisions about where to stay when booking a trip this summer. Of the few things we can control when it comes to the COVID-19 virus, cleanliness is probably the most crucial. As CHMGS has noted in a past blog post, the American Hotel and Lodging Association and each of the major hotel companies has partnered with the medical community to develop sets of cleanliness standards and protocols aimed at easing would-be travelers’ fears.

In an effort to continue its quest to be a “one-stop shop” for travelers searching for accommodations, Tripadvisor has added a key section to its site’s hotel listing pages featuring information about a property’s efforts to help guests “Travel safe during COVID-19.” The information includes a listing of the hotel’s cleanliness protocols, a message from the property’s manager, contact information for the property, and links to Tripadvisor’s community forum and review pages for that property. Listing “owners” for a property (typically the operation’s general manager or sales manager) must customize the COVID-19 section of their Tripadvisor listing in order for the information to appear (i.e., see example below).

Later, after a trip is complete and the guest reviews a property, Tripadvisor prompts the reviewer to answer questions about the property specific to their actual experience with that property’s procedures specific to cleanliness and social distancing. (i.e. see example to right).

These questions reflect another Tripadvisor survey finding – 81% of travelers want to see a hotel or operation’s cleanliness protocols in action throughout their experience at the hotel or activity.

Your visitors are looking for this information encourage your operating partners to participate in this Tripadvisor initiative and provide as much detail as possible.
